This Swing Advice is Ruining Your Game

Don’t lift your head.

There are a lot of myths in golf. One of them is so common that the majority of golfers still believe it.

We’ve all been there before. Maybe you are playing with someone inexperienced or maybe you are a beginner yourself. Someone in the group makes poor contact with the ball and an immediate assessment is made:

“You need to keep your head down.”

I would venture a guess that this advice and all of its permutations is the most offered swing adage of them all.

You might assume that the popularity of the saying means that it has to be right.

LINE vs NO LINE

A few years ago, we tested whether or not a line on your golf ball actually helps you make more putts. Here’s what we found.

From 5 feet the testers putting balls marked with a line finished the test in two fewer putts.
From 10 and 20 feet, the unmarked balls required fewer putts to complete the holes.
Holes putted using unmarked balls took fewer total putts to complete.
Testers mentioned that from 10 and 20 feet, their focus on the line impacted the pace of the putt. There was a noticeable trend that from greater distances, distance control was worse when balls were marked with a line.
