TUESDAY TOUR TALK

Who should be the president of golf?

If such a position existed—and the game would be better off if it did—that individual could reimagine golf in a way that is desperately needed.

To be clear, the recreational game is in very good shape. Participation is up and new forms of golf are becoming more popular. There is always work to be done, but all the vital signs are humming along without too much concern at the moment.

How the game is consumed, however, needs a lot of tinkering. The entertainment value of the game is down significantly as an increasingly archaic TV model has combined with the PGA Tour being watered down by LIV.

Pro golf could use a leader who understands the need for a total refresh.

Who would you vote for? Not Jay Monahan or Greg Norman, that is for sure.

One of the first people who comes to mind is Geoff Ogilvy. He played on the Tour but also has an expert point of view on big-picture topics. He’s young enough to grasp why YouTube golf has taken off and why the Tour is stagnant. He’s knowledgeable about course design, equipment, media and several other topics that matter greatly now.

I think USGA CEO Mike Whan would get support. His position on the rollback would be divisive but I think he would have the aggressiveness to make big swings. The experience leading large organizations would be beneficial.

Tiger Woods? He’s been heavily involved in reshaping the pro game during this Tour-PIF negotiation. His credentials go beyond being the GOAT. He could shake things up in a good way. (We’ll see if TGL, his new sim league, is a part of that shake up).

I’m not sure what the answer would be—but how nice would it be to have some leadership at a time like this?
