🏌️‍♂️ LIV Golfers have been disappointing

There is one GIGANTIC exception

Hi Golfer,

See you in Scotland ✌️ - Rory

Well, that didn’t take long.

As most of us expected, Rory McIlroy has released a statement congratulating Bryson on winning the U.S. Open. He’s taking some time off, but will be back for the Scottish Open and the Open Championship at Royal Troon.

I like his chances.

We’ve got plenty for you out of the gate today, but be sure to check back later (roughly noon Eastern time) for a new drop of what was previously tour-only gear.

No Golfer has Benefited from LIV More than Bryson

And it’s not close

The LIV leaderboard for the first three majors of the year has been telling.

The man at the top? Bryson DeChambeau, now a two-time major champion and a player who has overhauled his reputation in record time. DeChambeau, you could make the case, is having a better major season than world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. He was T6 at the Masters, runner-up at Valhalla for the PGA Championship and just won the U.S. Open at Pinehurst.

The rest of his LIV competitors? For the most part, they have been thoroughly disappointing.

It’s hard to find any LIV player who has seen their major performance improve since switching tours.

There is, however, one gigantic exception …

Let Rory Be

I’ve been seeing a lot of vitriol toward Rory McIlroy for his decision to eschew media following his heartbreaking collapse at last weekend’s U.S. Open.

Even as a media member, I think the reaction is over the top.

McIlroy made a series of mistakes down the stretch Sunday—including the miss of a 30-inch putt on the 16th hole—to let his fifth major victory slip away.

It felt reminiscent of other slow bleeds down the stretch in majors. Adam Scott fumbling away the 2012 Open Championship with four closing bogeys comes to mind.

It has been a decade since McIlroy’s last major win, and the pressure of breaking that drought seemed to weigh heavily on him as he fell apart in the most critical moments.

Watching from the scoring area, McIlroy could do nothing but slump over in disgust as Bryson DeChambeau got up and down from a bunker 55 yards short of the hole. The image of a distraught McIlroy is now a meme across social media, because of course it is.

McIlroy sped away in his courtesy car moments later. DeChambeau was just beginning his celebration by the time McIlroy’s plane went wheels up at the Pinehurst airport.

Should we expect McIlroy and other golfers to face the media music?

I would prefer to hear from him—it would be educational to hear his thoughts, and he is being paid handsomely to be an entertainer. Doing media is part of that entertainment.

But at the same time, he’s a devastated human who wants space.

His abrupt departure describes the pain in plenty of detail. And he did give a statement a day later, saying he needs a few weeks away from the game.

It would be nice if we showed our athletes a little grace now and then. It was probably a mistake for him to leave—a very human moment—but we don’t need to rake him over the coals.

Let the man be.

The Skins App

A better way to take money from your buddies

For diehard golfers who like (or need) a little action when they play, Skins is an on-course gamification app that features a slate of popular betting games with correct rules (not the made-up ones your buddy tries to impose in the middle of the third fairway), real-time scoring capability and even a direct-to-winner(s) from loser(s) payout platform.

Wallet forgetters, no more excuses!

GForce Swing Trainer

Fix your swing

Over the years, I’ve encountered some unique and helpful training aids. But I’ve also seen and used some that are bewildering, to say the least.

The GForce Swing Trainer is one that grabs your attention. It isn’t every day that you have an extremely flexible and lightweight golf club, especially one that’s designed for impact.

When you first see it, you can’t help but think, “There is no way I can hit golf balls with this!”

PUMA Golf Launches TEVERIS G

A retro golf sneaker

Are we getting to the point that we can call stuff from the early 2000s “retro”?

As a late ’90s baby, I shudder at the fact that some might consider me “old.” In any case, PUMA’s latest golf sneaker is inspired by the perfectly young running shoes of the 2000s.

We’re talking about those chunky, sporty sneakers that everyone wanted. That’s what PUMA has with the new TEVERIS G golf shoe.
