🏌️The MOST interesting man in golf?

Do you have to like him now?

Hi Golfer,

Let’s kick today off with some on-course trivia from the team at Shot Scope.

On par 3s, what is the average score for a 15-handicap?

👇 You’ll find the answer below (and just for fun, we’ve also included the data for other handicap groups as well).

Are you better or worse on par 3s than golfers of similar ability levels?

Today, we’ve got a new episode of No Putts Given, practice tips to help you play better golf, and some new pink splatter golf balls from Callaway (if that’s your thing).

Do I Have to Like Bryson Now?

Villian Becomes Hero

In this episode, we discuss Nelly Korda’s dominance, Mizuno’s quest to reassert itself as a serious player in the driver category, and Callaway’s surprising new driver release.

Our main topic is Bryson’s sudden boost in popularity, especially among the supportive crowds at Valhalla.

And that raises an interesting question.

When Par is More Like Birdie

Data from Shot Scope shows that, on Par 3s, a 15-handicap golfer is more likely to make bogey than par. With an average score of 3.9, for a 15-handicap, a run-of-the-mill par gains almost a full stroke against the cohort.

Interestingly, 20-handicap golfers don’t fare much worse, with a scoring average of 4.

As we look at data from better golfers, we find the following par 3 scoring averages:

🟦 10-handicaps: 3.7 (not much better)
🟦 5-handicaps: 3.4
🟦 Scratch golfers: 3.2

Does it surprise you that even the best offers average above par on the shortest holes?

If nothing else, the data should help reemphasize the importance of approach/iron play and hitting greens.

Direct-to-Consumer Grows Up

Giving You Affordable Choices

The direct-to-consumer golf equipment movement finds itself in an interesting moment in time as we head into June.

History shows us that while some things change, others mutate. The DTC world is somewhere in between.

Let’s say it’s “maturing.” Growing up, if you will.

What started as golf’s version of trite marketing phrases like “factory-direct pricing” and “cutting out the middleman” now is something quite different and significantly more meaningful. While DTC won’t be toppling the Big Five OEMs anytime soon, it’s certainly giving the likes of you and me more choices at lower prices.

How to Better Your Game with Practice

A Few Simple Tips

We all know someone who spends countless hours on the driving range hitting golf balls. They talk about how they are “grinding” to improve but rarely does it correlate to lower scores on the course. The reason? There’s a BIG difference between hitting balls on the range and practicing.

Golf Shoe 101: Do Materials Matter?

Which is Best?

A few months ago, I wrote about the new adidas S2G: a $110 spikeless shoe made primarily from leather. What I didn’t know at the time was that adidas offered the same shoe, sans leather, for $10 less. The “normal” S2G is made from ripstop rather than leather.

This discovery has led me on a journey that I’m happy to share with you. The goal? To find the answer to this burning question: Do materials make a difference? Put another way, given the choice between the two shoes of differing material construction, which is best?
