🏌️ Is THIS Your New Driver?

Find out now

Hi Golfer,

Who’s excited for a new driver launch?

I can’t say I saw this one coming, but Callaway has expanded its Ai Smoke lineup, and well …

I’m using Sandler’s Yesterday quote as a metaphor. The point is it would have been nice if this launched with the rest of the Paradym Ai Smoke family, but I’m not even mad about it. Frankly, I’m kind of pumped.

In other news, there’s a little voice in my head that’s driving me crazy, Sean is suddenly goo-goo for Bryson, and Phillip found an affordable full set of clubs that he’d actually play.

On with it.

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Triple Diamond Max

Embrace the Compromise?

Conceding that you never really know what a driver is going to do until you hit it, my hunch is that splitting the difference between the lower-spinning Triple Diamond and the more forgiving MAX is going to be right in the wheelhouse for a lot of golfers.

I’m excited to embrace the compromise, even if this is something that could have been brought TO MY ATTENTION YESTERDAY!

TOGETHER WITH L.A.B. GOLF

What If L.A.B. Golf is Right?

Every Word of this Story is True

There’s a little voice in my head that whispers, “What if L.A.B. Golf could help you putt better?”

Could it?

I don’t know the answer. For years, I’ve avoided the question. What I know is that I have co-workers and friends who swear by the company’s putters. The pro tours have been less resistant than I have.

Ask any of them and they’d likely say that L.A.B. has figured something out.

None of this proves that L.A.B. is absolutely right but it sure as hell has me wondering if I’ve been wrong this whole time.

Admit It - You’re Becoming a Bryson Fan

An Unlikely Fan Favorite

Bryson had become something of a pariah on the PGA Tour, and it was a well-earned distinction. He repeatedly proved his selfishness and lack of self-awareness, whether it was unfairly blaming manufacturers, calling Augusta National a par-67 or giving nonsensical lessons in pseudo physics.

Well, Bryson haters among us, it's time to admit he's become a lot more palatable in the past year or so.

And he's more than just palatable. I would even argue that Bryson is now all of the following …

Bridgestone Tour B Mindset Golf Balls

More than an Alignment Aid

The Bridgestone Mindset golf ball provided noticeable improvements for many testers, but not all. Several testers saw gains in driving distance and fairway accuracy but putting efficiency was the standout metric that saw the most gains.

Bridgestone set out to make a feature that would help golfers in a simple and effective manner. In general, our testers and the results they reported suggest this was accomplished with the Mindset. Although not all the testers will be converting, that doesn’t mean this isn’t an option that should be considered, especially if you do not have a pre-shot routine and are looking to adopt one.

🏌️ TOUR TUESDAY

Do low scores make major championships less worthy?

In a vacuum, the answer is no. Par is relative; everyone is playing the same course, and it’s intriguing to watch a major where players are forced to throw darts.

It was entertaining when Jason Day set that mark in his 2015 PGA Championship victory, when Henrik Stenson matched him while outdueling Phil Mickelson in the 2016 Open Championship, or when Cameron Smith also hit 20-under while racing past Rory McIlroy at the Old Course in 2022.

There is a place for low scores in major championship golf. Not every big event has to be a U.S. Open where 5-under has a great shot of winning. It could even be an identity for the PGA Championship to make their events into more of a “turkey shoot” where red numbers are required each round.

I had mixed feelings on what we saw last week, however.

Xander Schauffele reaching 21-under (now the all-time major record) didn’t bother me, but the way he got there did.

The PGA Championship field was collectively more than 250 shots better than the next-easiest PGA we’ve seen. If you watched the golf throughout the weekend, you would understand why: there was hardly any consequence for bad shots. Valhalla has simple greens and massive landing areas where hazards are barely in play.

There was little threat of disaster.

That threat should be a requirement for majors.

It’s a fine line. We got a packed leaderboard with a dramatic finish. Schauffele deserved the victory. The drama down the stretch was compelling.

The individual shots to get there, however, were decidedly boring.

Those other low-scoring majors I mentioned had consequences for misses. The players had to execute or there would be a price to pay. That is how the best player was identified.

I don’t think that is too much to ask.

PLAY BETTER

Putting on Different Types of Grass

It Matters

The next time you line up a putt, pay attention to the grass. Get down and look at it. Touch it. Smell it. Listen to it. Dare we say… taste it?

All right, so we can’t actually recommend you do any of that but our point is that the type of grass on the green can affect how your ball rolls.

Being able to identify what’s between your ball and the hole could be the advantage you need.
