Are Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas Washed?

Changing of the guard?

Only a few years ago, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth were fixtures sitting near the top of the professional golf world.

Spieth was electric early in his career, quickly capturing three majors before the age of 25. In his first four years on the PGA Tour, he won 11 times.

Thomas took longer to establish himself in the big leagues but transformed into a top five player in the world, winning five times in 2017 before adding a Players Championship (2021) and a second major (2022 PGA Championship).

Individually, they were stars. Together, they were teammates on Ryder and Presidents Cup squads every year—and we figured they would stay that way for most, if not all, of their careers.

Surprisingly, Thomas and Spieth have gradually fallen away from the game’s main stage.

It’s been 27 months since either of them won a golf tournament. Spieth is approaching eight years since winning a major. Neither of them made the U.S. Presidents Cup team that won in Montreal last month.

The underlying analytics show that both players are miles away from what they used to be. Thomas is No. 22 in the Data Golf rankings and No. 32 in the Official World Golf Ranking. Spieth is No. 100 in the Data Golf and No. 54 in the OWGR.

These up-and-coming young guns are not so young anymore as both players have already turned 31 years old.

Injuries can explain some of the struggles—Spieth recently had surgery on his troublesome wrist—but there are larger concerns that maybe the brightest days of their careers are behind them.

Will they win again? It’s very likely.

Will they dominate again? That might have to remain a memory.
